Episode 7 – On the Road Again

August 9, 2011

Welcome to Episode 7 of Dining Driving with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “On the Road Again,” Ali and Jeff continue their harrowing journey through the green, rolling countryside of Pennsylvania and New York, while they discuss the future of Pagan publishing, storytelling as a way of uniting theory with practice, tensions between authority and vulnerability in Pagan writing, and the real work of wandering in the wilderness. Jeff mostly focuses on not crashing the car while Ali returns to her favorite theological bones to worry and reflects a bit about the challenges that face Pagan bloggers today. And a special treat for listeners: a Jonathan Coulton song that’s actually performed by Jonathan Coulton (since Ali so badly mutilated some of his work in the last episode of DwD, we figured we kind of owe it to him).

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

Thanks for listening, and join us next time here on DwD!

Episode 6 – Moving Right Along

August 2, 2011

Welcome to Episode 6 of Dining Driving with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “Moving Right Along,” Ali and Jeff have an extra special surprise for listeners as they change things up and take their usual dinner conversation on the road in a surprise trip through some of the beautiful landscapes of central Pennsylvania and New York. Jeff revisits the question of Buddhism for Vampires and what it means for polytheists and Pagans looking for meaning and spiritual value in a culture of “undead gods,” Ali waxes philosophic about the relationship between creativity and destruction in modern Pagan ritual and the creative arts, and in general a lot of geeky nonsense gets spouted about linguistics and recursion that might not be interesting to anyone who isn’t a computational linguist or software engineer. (It’s turtles all the way down!)

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

Thanks for listening, and tune in next week for the second half of our special two-parter “Driving with Druids”!

Episode 5 – A Cup of Tea

July 26, 2011

Welcome to Episode 5 of Dining with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “A Cup of Tea,” Ali and Jeff tread some murky waters, exploring topics of horror, disgust, Buddhism, beauty, fundamentalism, nationalism and spiritual warfare. Things get sticky, Ali confuses the Arctic with Antarctica, and Jeff continues to be sensible and soft-spoken (so turn your iPods up to eleven!). The key phrase to remember for this episode, and where the title of this post comes from, is the Buddhist proverb:

“Drinking a cup of tea, I stop the war.”

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

Ali also wrote a follow-up/prequel essay, “I am a Conscientious Objector in the Spiritual War” that listeners might be interested in checking out.

As always, thanks for listening, and join us next time!

Episode 4 – H to the P

July 19, 2011

Welcome to Episode 4 of Dining with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “H to the P“, Ali and Jeff geek out over the latest and last Harry Potter film, and spoiler alerts abound. Is Harry Potter a Christ figure? Who’s the most compelling character of the series? How is Voldemort like Loki? Is Dumbledore a magical version of George Washington? What can J.K. Rowling’s stories tell us about adolescence, torture, bureaucracy, mainstream media and socialized medicine? Wait — did Jeff just win an argument? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, duh!
  • The Political Lessons of Harry Potter,” by Alyssa Rosenberg, ThinkProgress.org
  • Christology
  • Feudalism
  • Norse mythology
  • Movie magic and the wonders of CGI
  • Ali’s goth side
  • Harry Potter
  • Seriously, though, mostly Harry Potter

And some exciting news! Dining with Druids is now available in the iTunes store! So, you know, that’s cool. Check it out, subscribe, and show us some love if you like.

Also, stay tuned for some Harry Potter-related specials coming up later this week! Surprises are in store.

Until next time, thanks for listening!

Episode 3 – As It Turns Out…

July 14, 2011

Welcome to Episode 3 of Dining with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “As It Turns Out…“, Ali and Jeff finally hit a groove thanks to a mix of caffeine and fatigue, and conversation ranges far and wide over such subjects as: cats, solar panels, victory gardens, liberalism, libertarianism, sexism, atheism, and how testosterone can determine your career path. Ali accidentally says some stuff conservatives agree with, and Jeff treats listeners to a passage from Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra as read in a fake Texan accent. Cu Gwyn the Wonder Cat looks on unamused.

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

Hey listeners, chime in and answer some of the astounding and puzzling questions we pose during tonight’s episode, and we’ll read your comments next time (even if they’re total bull-putty)!

As always, thanks for listening!

Episode 2 – Pagan/Christian Table Talk

July 12, 2011

Welcome to Episode 2 of Dining with Druids! We’re your hosts, Ali and Jeff Lilly.

In tonight’s episode, “Pagan/Christian Table Talk,” the Pagans and the Christians sit together at the table, finding faith and common ground wherever they are able. Er… wait. Something like that. Ali and Jeff read some awesome comments from readers and listeners, reminisce about their experiences at the Wild Goose Festival, and explore the importance of one-on-one interfaith work in gaining acceptance and combatting religious discrimination for Pagans. Mostly, Ali talks too fast and says “you know” a lot, while Jeff chuckles supportively.

Mentioned in tonight’s episode:

Special Guest appearance by:

  • Cu Gwyn, the Wonder Cat (in what critics describe as a startlingly ground-breaking, breath-taking silent role)

Thanks for listening! (And thanks for sticking with us as we get the hang of this!)
